The colors on the koi is caused by pigment colors are hidden under the skin of fish.Pigment color will develop if there are foods that support its development. Fish in the wild will obtain natural red, orange and yellow color pigments, via carotenoids, through natural food sources such as shrimps, snails, daphnia and blood worms. Pond's lack these natural food sources so the fish require a supplement to their diets. Unfortunately natural color enhancers are an expensive addition to a diet, so many fish foods do not contain them or they are provided in such small quantities they are not effective.

Water Quality For Best Koi Growth
Koi growth, health and color of are dependent on water condition, the first thing to suspect koi fish problem is water quality. Good water quality comes from the perfect koi pond filter. Daily checking for water quality in the koi pond is very important for the health of Koi. Fresh water are used by some Koi keepers without a Filtration system, but a large amount of fresh water should not be put into the pond at one time. If a quantity of fresh water is entering the pond, the Koi's body system has to adjust to the new water condition. A loss of shine and color fading can be a result of excessive water changes. Carp like to live in the same water condition and environment.

Disolved Oxygen in The Koi Pond
Oxygen is essential for koi growth, More fish die from a lack of oxygen than any other cause. Koi Keeper should always monitor the actual disolved oxygen in the water every time. Disolved oxygen in the water should 't less than the required by koi fish. Oxygen levels can only be determined by measurement with a water test kit or an oxygen meter like as Ammonia test kit. Submerged plants and algae take oxygen out of the water at night. Their effect can be significant when you have green water in the koi pond. In Warm water koi increased consume oxygen.

Koi Pond Filter Requirements
Success of the koi pond filter depends on the proper design of water filter. There are some things to consider to design koi pond filter. Make ideal flow rates and filter retention times for koi pond filtration systems is good idea. Because long retention time to make bacteria alive and well so decomposition of ammonia to be perfect. If water flow in the koi pond filter is too fast is not good as well as water flow is too slow.

Koi Treatment with Heat Therapy
Koi are not truly a cold water species. Although they can live in very cold water, their metabolism functions better when the water temperature is near 76 degrees Fahrenheit. Koi's immune system is very slow below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Many Koi ponds throughout the world never reach prime temperature for Koi.

BASIC KOI POND DESIGN
KOI POND DESIGN -- This article is a compiation of many koi experts' and enthusiasts' views, with an intermingling of my own views. . Besides collecting data from amny issues of KOI USA and Rinko Magazines, there is reference to Tetra's Koi Encyclopedia and heavy emphasis on Grant Fujita's book. My main goal is to give the koi hobbyist the foundation of what both a Basic beginner's pond as well as an ideal Koi pond should contain. Realizing that not everyone has the space, money, nor ambition to do all that is mentioned in my paper for the Ideal Koi Pond. I at least try to emphasize those things that every koi pond should have to both minimize the maintenance and, even more importantly, to improve the health and quality of their koi.

Green Water Problem
Green water in the koi pond is the scourge of outdoor pond owners. Green water is caused by a population explosion of algae in the koi pond. Algae are microscopic, single-celled plants, which can easily multiply to a density of as much as 7,000-15,000 per milliliter. With that many of them in the water, it's no wonder that the water turns green. Koi ponds can get high concentrations of phosphates from food decomposition, and nitrates from the nitrification cycle. High concentrations of phosphates and nitrates are the food for pond algae, along with some iron as a catalyst. So high ammonia in the koi pond will make koi pond green.

Self Cleaning Koi Pond
Design your pond with straight walls and a sloping bottom. The vertical walls will not collect debris and they will also help keep predators out of the pond. Ideal water depth for a koi pond is 3 to 4 feet. The bottom should slope to centralized bottom drains. These drains will take the dirty water to your filter. Cement ponds can be vertical. Liner ponds may need an angled wall in order to prevent the soil from caving in. The liner wall can be a vertical wall for the first 18 to 24 inches depeding on the stability of your soil. The wall can then angle towards the floor to make up the additional depth needed to achieve 3 to 4 feet.

Selecting Showa Koi
SHOWA KOI FISH -- Showa is also a Kohaku koi type, that has a black pattern on top. They are in gosanke koi classification. Select showa must start with that perfect Kokaku. The word, Kohaku, sure comes up a lot.Take the perfect Kohaku and add the black in the right places and you have Showa. Showa is koi type with combination of a good Kohaku and a good Shiro Utsuri koi type. Showa go through many changes as they grow. Many times the black is very deep and only comes out as the fish grows. For this reason, if you see gray areas, it might not be poor quality white but deep black that will appear later.

Koi Pond Skimmers
KOI POND SKIMMER-- Pond skimmers are an important element of koi ponds, since they keep ponds looking clean. Also, koi ponds covered in debris and leaves are unhealthy, and can create an unsafe environment for your koi fish and water plants. Without pond skimmers, unwanted elements eventually sink to the bottom of the koi pond, decay, and create gases. Most pond skimmers also house the pond pump, and contain filter media to clean the water. These products are effective while being easy to disguise or hide which helps your koi pond retain a natural look. We offer a variety of pond skimmers, including koi pond skimmers, water garden skimmers and more.
